Angelina Jolie Appointed UN Special Representative for Refugee Crisis

Angelina Jolie is known for quite a few things – her acting ability, her impressive body (of work), her partnership with Brad Pitt and her activism. While Jolie is still actively engaged in entertainment, she’s also been taking an active role in attempting to make the world a better place. On Tuesday, Jolie was n amed Special Representative to the United Nations for the Afghan refugee crisis, a logical evolution of the actress’ long-standing role with the UN. For the past decade, Jolie has acted as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and provided extra assistance via her $5 million in donations to the cause.

It’s always great to see those with resources helping out those who don’t, and celebrities in particular can act as role models for the many who hold them in high regard. Leading by example can be a great motivator for others, but why stop there? Perhaps there are other activist roles Jolie could take on. Consider the following.

Chairman of the Federal Reserve: Sure, Jolie doesn’t have an education in economics like current Fed chairman Ben Bernanke or his predecessor, Alan Greenspan, but let’s face it – she clearly knows how to make money. Perhaps she could use some of her savvy to pull the country out of its current economic woes. After all, you don’t go around donating $5 million to a single charitable cause if you’re in dire financial straits.

Women’s Rights Activism: Jolie is a great example of how powerful a woman can become when given the right opportunities. Given her success, perhaps Jolie should think about helping other women attain the opportunities that many take for granted. In many countries – and even in some parts of the United States – women suffer from oppression and would never stand a chance at doing what Jolie has done, so perhaps she could help alleviate the issues others face.

Eating Disorder Awareness: No matter how optimistic you are about the entertainment industry, there’s no denying that it’s a field in which looks definitely matter. The pressures of media portrayals of ideal appearance as well as pressures from peers due to cultural standards are well-known. Because celebrities often – directly or indirectly – help enforce these ideals, it would be good to have a celebrity help change the tide. And let’s face it – there would be no lack of financial resources for the campaign. Obviously, the possibilities are endless, and the potential effectiveness is of course not just limited to Jolie, but any other celebrity with free time, resources and a will to promote welfare.
