Call Me Maybe’ takes over the Internet: Miss USA contestants join Justin Bieber, Katy Perry in lip-synching Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit song
Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” is the musical gift that keeps on giving.
The saccharine sweet pop hit has taken over Hollywood, inspiring countless famous faces — from Justin Bieber to Katy Perry — to take over the Internet with videos of themselves lip syncing to the song.
The Miss USA contestants even jumped on the lip dub band wagon this week with their own version of the popular song, dressing up in evening wear and skimpy bikinis to mouth the lyrics to the tune.
The video even includes a cameo from the beauty pageant’s notorious owner Donald Trump.
Jepsen, 26, can thank Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez for sparking the viral craze in February when they gathered a few of their famous friends to record an adorable video of themselves dancing and lip syncing to the song.
Thanks to fans of the Disney crew, the video has since garnered over 41 million views on YouTube and Jepsen’s single became an overnight hit. It’s since reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and nabbed Jepsen a gig to open for Bieber on his arena tour.
Even Academy Award nominee James Franco couldn’t resist recording himself singing along while driving in his car.
Katy Perry and her friends recorded their own fun version during a weekend at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calif. in April.
But the fad didn’t stop with celebrities.
Not only did the Harvard baseball team learn the lyrics to the bubblegum song, they also choreographed a fist-pump dance to perform while riding in the backseat of a van. Following suit, several more sports teams including Duke, University of Connecticut and Syracuse have created their own video parodies.
