There were a slew of standout moments at last night’s AMAs: Taylor Swift took home Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Country Album and Artist Of The Year, Nicki Minaj scored Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Justin Bieber wore leopard pants and did the running man with LMFAO (true story). But perhaps one of the most memorable acts of the night was Katy Perry — not only did she win a special achievement award for being the first female to have five No. 1 singles off the same album, but she also performed a gorgeous acoustic rendition of her midtempo ode to lost love, “The One That Got Away.”
Instead of her usual rowdy stage productions consisting of whipped cream bras jumping and dancing, Katy chose to stand still for once take it down a notch for her emotional new song. As she took to the stage, Katy was surrounded by a flood of warm pink and purple lights. Her face was somber as she channeled the sadness felt by “Grandma Perry” in Katy’s moving “The One That Got Away” video. Katy strummed her guitar — props for being a pop star who plays an instrument, gurl — and looked off longingly into the audience as she sang: “And in another life/I would make you stay/So I don’t have to say/You were the one that got away.”
Of course it wasn’t all somber — Katy Perry basically looked like a pink-haired Judy Jetson for the performance. Seriously, who else could be that convincingly emotional while decked in a pink space suit?
