Katy Perry Insists ‘Part Of Me’ Is Not About Russell Brand

Katy Perry is coming out against reports that her new hit, ‘Part of Me,’ is about her split with Russell Brand.
‘Part of Me’ is a massive hit already and was Perry’s first No. 1 debut. When she premiered the track at the Grammys this year, it was her first major public appearance following the divorce — leading fans and press to speculate that the kiss-off anthem was inspired by her breakup with the British funnyman. This was, of course, in spite of the fact that demos of the track had emerged as early as 2010, when she and Brand were still going strong.
“I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everyone is like, ‘Oh, it sounds so current!’” Perry scoffs to MTV. “Some people I work with are like, ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple weeks ago.’”
This was not a sentiment the blue-haired belter was comfortable with. “I’m not a d—,” Perry said bluntly. “I always tell the truth. I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording ‘Teenage Dream,’” she explained. “It didn’t feel right on the record. I felt like I’d have to take out one of my other songs — it was between ‘Part of Me’ and another song on the record that I felt was a really complete package,” she said.
“That’s why I’m doing ‘The Complete Confection,’” Perry continued. “It was always planned to be released in the spring of this year, to perform it at a big thing,” she says. “But then sometimes I think, ‘Am I living in ‘The Truman Show’ type movie?! What’s going on?” she laughed. “I sit down and I write all these songs at once, all of these emotions and feelings and thoughts, and sometimes it feels like I’m caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music!”
