Katy Perry has made Billboard history as the first woman with five number one songs from one album.

The 26-year-old singer has equalled the late Michael Jackson’s US singles chart record.

Her latest track Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 following chart topping singles California Gurls, the album’s title track Teenage Dream, Firework and E.T.

Perry, who is married to British comic Russell Brand was quick to respond to the news on Twitter, posting: “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 made HISTORY!”

Meanwhile her husband chose to support the UK’s students on his Twitter page: “British youths! Good luck with your A-levels, but don’t take it too seriously. I’ve got none and still married a pop star.”

Michael Jackson set the original record in 1987 with his album Bad.

His five singles included I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, and Dirty Diana.

Perry, however, is the first female artist to have five number ones off the same album in the 53-year history of Billboard.

While Jackson spent a total of seven weeks at the top with his songs; Katy Perry has been at number one for a cumulative 18 weeks.
