Megan Fox insisted on the pool scene. She was keen to see me in swimwear
In just a year he has made the leap from being a familiar face to fans of
Channel 4 comedy The IT Crowd to becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest leading
men, with a Bafta Rising Star nomination.
Most bafflingly of all for the 32-year-old Irishman who only made his film
breakthrough in the romantic comedy Bridesmaids last year he is also a SEX
Not that Chris can take advantage of his new-found status, as he is engaged to
TV presenter and journalist Dawn Porter.
He says: “I think it’s really silly for people to think I’m a heart-throb. The
character in Bridesmaids was very sweet, so women loved him.
“I want to know where all these women were when I was 15 and couldn’t get a
kiss for love nor money. I chose the wrong year to get engaged.”
Chris will cap his huge 12 months by marrying Dawn this summer. Luckily she is
coping well with the attention her man receives from the opposite sex since
hitting the big screen.
He says: “Dawn jokes that she doesn’t get it. But at the same time she thinks
me being a heart-throb is a great craic.
“In some way it vindicates her own decision, so that’s pleasing.”
It’s a long way from The IT Crowd, which was written by Father Ted creator
Graham Linehan and featured Chris as geeky computer technician Roy
Trenneman. Richard Ayoade played his colleague, Moss.
Chris says: “I learned a lot from The IT Crowd. Graham and Richard are great
people to learn from. They’re clever b*******.”
For now, though, he is focusing on his own sitcom for Sky, Moon Boy.
He says: “It’s a semi-autobiographical show about a 12-year-old growing up in
the west of Ireland with imaginary friends.
“There is a lot of animation in it and Johnny Vegas plays an English wrestler.”
Chris will break away from shooting the show to attend the Baftas on February
12 at London’s Royal Opera House.
He is favourite to bag the Rising Star award, previously won by James McAvoy,
Kristen Stewart and Tom Hardy.
Chris will compete with Adam Deacon, Chris Hemsworth, Eddie Redmayne and Tom
Hiddleston for this year’s gong.
He says: “It’s really exciting, it will be a big night. It’s great to be
“I feel like I could have fathered the other nominees.”
Chris’s role in The IT Crowd led to minor parts in comedy movies The Boat That
Rocked in 2009 and Dinner For Schmucks in 2010.
And those got him cast as dopey but loveable police officer Nathan Rhodes in
Bridesmaids, love interest to lead character Annie, played by Kristen Wiig.
Although it had a relatively low budget the film went on to make more than
180million at cinemas around the world last summer.
The movie’s success, and Chris’s appearance, seemed to come from nowhere.
He says: “People were very surprised to see me in Bridesmaids but no one was
more surprised than me.
“Luckily I don’t get too nervous on the Hollywood sets but I have been lucky
to be working with some sound people.
“Bridesmaids was an open, lovely set and the crew were all great. It was very
easy to get on with it.
“You hang out together so much that the nerves and trepidation go out the
window pretty quickly.”
That comedy helped Chris bag his next role too.
He will appear in This Is 40, a follow-up to Knocked Up, which also stars Paul
Rudd and Jason Segel and is out later this year.
In one scene that will make a lot of men very jealous, Chris appears in a
swimming pool with Megan Fox. He jokes: “She insisted on the swimming pool
scene. She was just very keen to see me in swimwear and I don’t think she
“It’s a scene where I fight for her affections at a barbecue. It’s just lucky
I didn’t have to wear Speedos. I was in quite high Hawaiian shorts instead.”
Megan has a reputation as a diva on film sets after falling out with
Transformers director Michael Bay. But Chris is quick to defend her. He
says: “She was an absolute sweetheart on set. I just don’t get the whole
Michael Bay thing. I hate his f***ing films.
“They are bad. I don’t think she got enough respect for that argument and of
course, she’s a handsome woman too.”
If cinema-goers were surprised to see Chris make his Hollywood breakthrough
then it was even stranger for them to see him pop up on The Xtra Factor back
Fiance Dawn is best pals with presenter Caroline Flack, who persuaded the
couple to appear as guests on The X Factor spin-off with her and fellow
presenter Olly Murs.
Chris prompted online Twitter comments from viewers claiming he was drunk. He
doesn’t deny the accusation and isn’t bothered anyway.
He says: “I’m a big X Factor fan so I ended up on The Xtra Factor drunk
because of Caroline.
“I’m not being ironic, I just love the drama of the show. I’m addicted to it.
“It was cool but I’d had a few drinks and I was rude. I feel bad, but feck it,
it doesn’t matter.”
Presenter Caroline will be able to get her own back later this year when she
organises the hen do for Dawn, who has presented documentaries for Channel 4
and BBC Three. Chris says he has yet to set a date for the wedding due to
work commitments but Dawn is already planning a big blow-out before they tie
He says: “We’re talking about the wedding at the end of the summer. I like
that Dawn is focused on it and in wedding mode.
“Because Caroline is organising Dawn’s hen night I’m worried. I’m definitely
not going to ask them any questions.
“I will probably never see Dawn again after she leaves for that.”
There’ll be plenty of women hoping he’s not joking.
