North Charleston officer fires shots on expressway
An early morning altercation outside of the Southern Belle Gentleman’s Club ended in shots being fired by a suspect and a North Charleston police officer.
Shakira Washington faces possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime and two counts of assault and battery in the first degree charges.
According to Charleston Police, the 25-year-old Charleston woman and another person got into a verbal altercation around 3:00 Saturday morning outside the gentleman’s club. Police allege Washington fired shots at a taxi cab as the cab and the van she was in drove down Meeting Street and eventually onto the Crosstown.
The victims flagged down a North Charleston police officer–who was stopped at a red light–and the officer eventually fired shots at the rogue van.
The suspect’s van and the taxi cab each carried two people; the four involved in the altercation were detained by police.
While Washington was the only person charged, the shooting closed Interstate 26 for at least two hours Saturday morning.
The officer was not injured and remains on duty. The State Law Enforcement Division will continue investigating this incident.
