It’s not exactly the kind of outfit you might catch her in at church.

But Katy Perry – whose parents are both pastors – was clearly feeling somewhat sinful tonight as she paired a cleavage-baring cutaway dress with a crucifix ring.

The 27-year-old singer completed her look with a pair of studded red velvet heels as she promoted her film Part Of Me in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil tonight at a photocall.

Religious: The singer was attending a photocall for her movie Katie Perry: Part of Me in Rio de Janeiro and was also wearing a crucifix ring on her finger

Of course, Katy is not first pop star to cavort – some may say blasphemously – with religious imagery.

The likes of Madonna and Lady Gaga have also caused controversy
in the past with their risqué religious statements (people may recall
Gaga dressed as a nun on stage last year – getting spanked by a
dog-collar wearing Jean Paul Gaultier).

And earlier this month, Perry slipped into a gold crucifix dress for the Sydney premire of the documentary film.

Earlier in the day, Katy stepped onto
her hotel balcony in another striking outfit, to be greeted by teams of
adoring fans waiting for her below.

Recurring theme: Katy wore a gold crucifix dress to the Sydney premiere of her movie earlier this month

The breeze whipped her styled hair into a series of silly shapes, making Katy look more like a smurf than a pop star.

The singer is in Brazil where she has
been mobbed by fans who have laid siege to her hotel. The fans were
certainly dedicated, sitting outside the hotel all night in case Katy
decided to wave to them.

They were rewarded when she emerged today.

‘I hear you out there (and all of last
night!)’ she tweeted. ‘I might have some spare passes to the premiere
tonight for the most dedicated…’

And she added: ‘I woke up from my cat
nap to the sound of hundreds of brazilian katycats outside my hotel
room chanting Katy Eu Te Amo’

The 27-year-old, real name Katheryn Hudson, is in the country to promote her new film, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D.

Her trip comes amid rumours the newly divorced star has been spending time with lothario John Mayer.

Mayer, who famously wrote Your Body is a Wonderland for ex Jennifer Love Hewitt, has dated a string of Hollywood women.

He and Russell Brand’s ex-wife Perry were seen out together last month two nights in a row.

The
songstress was dating guitarist Robert Ackroyd of Florence + the
Machine earlier this year, but played down suggestions the relationship
was serious.

Mayer is a notorious serial dater, whose past loves include Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Minka Kelly, and Jennifer
Aniston.

He
was also romantically linked to Taylor Swift from late 2009 until June
2010. They recorded together the song Half Of My Heart.

She wrote a less than complimentary song about her relationship with him, Dear John, which appears on her 2010 Speak Now album.
