Rihanna Earns Her 19th Top 10 Single On the Billboard Hot 100 With "Cheers (Drink To That)" – About
Just over six years ago, pop music fans in the US had never heard of a young woman from the island nation of Barbados named Rihanna . Now it is hard to imagine the pop music landscape without her. This week her latest single “Cheers (Drink To That)” becomes Rihanna’s 19th visit to the top 10. In the past six years she has landed a phenomenal 16 singles as lead artist and three as featured artist in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. This is running at a rate of more than three songs a year in the top 10. In fact, from 2006 on a calendar year has not gone by without Rihanna appearing in the top 10 at least three times. She will need to generate one more hit this year to keep the streak alive for 2011. A phenomenal 10 of those songs have gone all the way to #1.
As a point of comparison, at this point in her pop career Madonna had been to the top 10 a total of 17 times with seven of those songs going to #1. Mariah Carey had 15 top 10 hits in her first six years on the pop charts and 11 of those reached #1 which does outstrip Rihanna’s pace with #1 hits. Perhaps the most phenomenal fact is that Rihanna has reached this level of pop success at the age of only 23.
