Shakira to be Awarded Person of the Year

According to the Latin Grammy group, Shakira, Latina singer and songwriter, will receive the award 2011 Latin Recording Academy person of the year. There will be a tribute gala for Shakira at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas on November 9, just a day before the 12th annual awards presentation. She was given the honor because of her philanthropic works and successes as an artist. Shakira was also nominated for the Grammy’s Best Album of the Year, as well as two other awards.

The Colombian singer is expected to join a dinner at Mandalay Bay where friends and other artists will play and perform her songs and hits to celebrate the award. Shakira grew up in Colombia and began to showcase her talent in singing with the combination of Latin, rock and Mediterranean styles. She started recording in the early 1990s, until she got a break in 1996 with her album “Pies Descalzos”. Another album “Donde Estan Los Ladrones” and “Shakira: MTV Unplugged” followed later on. She won Best Latin Pop Album in the Grammys for “Shakira: MTV Unplugged”. She added a couple of Latin Grammy awards in 2000 in Germany. She became famous in the United States and all over the world with the album “Laundry Service”.

When Shakira turned 18, she started the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which aided underprivileged kids with their academic requirements. She is also a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and a Global Campaign for education honorary chairperson. She is the youngest singer to ever receive the award. Others who have attained the person of the year award include Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana and Placido Domingo.

According to Shakira, “It is truly an honor to be in the company of some of the greatest artists and legends of Latin Music.” Gabriel Abaroa, Jr., The Latin Recording Academy CEO and President added, “We are honored to pay homage to this dynamic, socially conscious woman whose illustrious career has touched so many people around the world, both musically and personally.”
