Socialite, actor, businesswoman Paris Hilton on her first visit to India this week

Paris Hilton once had a hit series called The Simple Life, but her life is anything but. She is a socialite, actor, singer, businesswoman, model and fashion designer rolled into one. With a knack for self-promotion, she has proved that modern-day celebritydom is a strong foundation on which to build fortunes. An up, close and personal look at the “iconic blonde” (her words), who is on her first visit to India this week.

Who is she?

Paris is the eldest child of real estate developer Richard Hilton and socialite Kathy Richards Hilton. She is an heir to the Hilton hotel fortune along with sister Nicky and brothers Barron and Conrad. Paris, 30, has a pet chihuahua, Tinkerbell, and a sometime boyfriend, Cy Waits, a Las Vegas nightclub developer.

Paris’ Pastimes

Paris lives a life – involving lots of shopping and dancing in nightclubs with girlfriends – under the camera. If she hates the paparazzi, it certainly doesn’t show. But she takes time out to visit her mother. She also does community service – never mind that it is mandated by the court for her many ingressions. She drives around in a Barbie-pink Bentley convertible and is usually seen with an assistant.

Queen of Controversies

Paris’s traffic infractions include numerous convictions for driving recklessly or while drunk (or both). Sample this: she once drove 70 mph in a 35 mph zone. She has done probation and a jail sentence for violating its terms. She has been accused on numerous occasions of smoking marijuana or detained after being caught in possession of cannabis and cocaine.

Paris is also famous or infamous, depending on your views on sex tapes, for a four-minute video that is still circulating on the internet nearly a decade after its ‘launch’. Dubbed One Night in Paris, it features Paris engaging in intimate acts with the then-boyfriend Rick Salomon. Salomon marketed the video and made millions. Red Light District, a little known video company in California, hit the jackpot when it landed distribution rights to the sex tape. The DVD has sold some 6,00,000 copies and counting to date.

Astute Businesswoman

Paris may be stuck with a party-girl image, but has a knack of branching out to one business interest after the other. She is the founder of Heiress Records, a sub-label of Warner Brothers. She is an author – of Confessions of An Heiress: A Tongue-in-Cheek Peek behind the Pose, a New York Times bestseller. Paris also happens to be the owner of a perfume line and a nightclub franchise. She has designer shoes to her name. She has also entered the motorcycle racing business.
