Taylor Swift and Other Singers Have Mixed Success in Movies
Taylor Swift was dealt a major blow when she lost out on a role in a movie version of “Les Miserables.” Swift has not had much luck in the acting department. She gave a subpar performance in the ensemble comedy “Valentine’s Day” and has little else to offer the world of film. The fact that she was dumped from a movie doesn’t bode well for her future career on the big screen. She shouldn’t fret too much though. If Swift never makes it as an actress she won’t be alone. A number of female singing sensations have dabbled in film. It is safe to say that the success levels have been mixed.
Madonna has appeared in a lot of movies. Her work has ranged from acclaimed movies like “Evita” and “Dick Tracy” to movies that none of us want to remember. Examples of those include “Swept Away” and “Body of Evidence.” Despite her many failures Madonna can at least take solace in the fact that she has turned in some suitable work over the years. It is safe to say that the queen of pop music could land a movie role at any given time.
The pinnacle of Spears in movies came with a cameo appearance in the third Austin Powers movie. She attempted to cross over with “Crossroads” in 2002 but that movie went into the tank. Spears has done some nice work on television but it would take a major power shift in Hollywood for her to ever be a movie star.
Moore’s movie career ranges from forgettable to a guilty pleasure. She has appeared in some okay movies but most of them have been duds. Moore’s looks and charm will land her some good supporting roles in the future. But leading lady status is likely to avoid her for the foreseeable future. There’s talent there, but like her singing career she hasn’t left a lot of memories on screen.
If “Crossroads” was a dud for Spears than “Glitter” was an atomic bomb for Carey. As long as people keep making lists of the worst movies ever, Carey’s silver screen status would be secure. She earned a Razzie award for that train wreck. It should come as no surprise that Hollywood hasn’t looked her way when big roles appear. To be fair, Carey did earn recognition as part of the ensemble cast in “Precious.” But she hasn’t shown up in movie in more than two years.
Hudson went from “American Idol” contestant to Oscar winner, a journey that few would have predicted for anyone associated with that show. She picked up that trophy for “Dreamgirls.” Hudson also performed well in “The Secret Lives of Bees.” Her list of credits might be small but she boasts more quality than most singers that tried to cross over. A few more movies and she could wind up being the greatest singer turned actress ever.
