The Carpetbagger: Justin Bieber Makes an Awards-Season Appearance, Sort of
Paramount PicturesA scene from “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” a contender for the Epiphany Prize.
It’s not every day that Justin Bieber and Terrence Malick are up for the same award.
Though neither of them are likely to show up, they are both nominees for the Epiphany Prize from Movieguide, a Christian nonprofit organization “dedicated to redeeming the values of the entertainment industry by influencing industry executives and by informing and equipping the public about the influence of the entertainment media.”

The Epiphany Prize will bestow $100,000 – which is quite influencing indeed – to the most inspiring film that created a “great increase in man’s love or understanding of God.” Alongside “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and Mr. Malick’s “Tree of Life,” the nominees include three films from Sony — “Of Gods and Men,” “Courageous” and “Soul Surfer” – as well as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which suggests that perhaps the folks at Movieguide aren’t that familiar with the details of Johnny Depp’s personal life (or ever read Keith Richards’ autobiography).
In other awards news, the Visual Effects Society announced its winners, and it was a good night for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” “Rango” and “Hugo.” Both “Hugo” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” have Oscar nominees for their visual effects, so this bodes well for them.
